Oh, what a year. 2019 was a mess of a mess to finish out the decade. Like Charli XCX said, “the world is burning. literally and metaphorically.” Since the planet is in flames, we might as well dance while we try to save this burning ball we call home.
2019 will go down as the year Lizzo owned everything. The flautist bombshell finally got her due. Beyoncé wowed with Homecoming. Lady Gaga won an Oscar for “Shallow”. Lil Nas X stole the country charts and our queer hearts. Rihanna was named the world’s richest female musician. The Jonas Brothers reunited. Hot Girl Summer happened. My Chemical Romance reunited. Kacey Musgraves gave us Christmas. Get your New Year started right with our favorite music of 2019. Hopefully 2020 can rise from the ashes of this year’s flames. Sometimes less is more. LÉON proved that with her debut album this year. While it might not have the bells and whistles that Hannah Diamond and Charli XCX fashioned into their tunes, LÉON is an album of passionate, pop perfection. Starting with “Lost Time”, LÉON pulls us in to spend a moment with her after so many “wasted nights”. Executively produced by LÉON herself, the album is a singular version of classic pop. It’s a testament to LÉON’s independence that this debut pushes her songwriting further while staying true to her iconic sound. While this album has somehow flown under the radar of charts and music critics alike, our hope is that LÉON will continue to make beautiful, soul-filled pop that has us falling.
